HOW TO USE

KILN POSTS
(a/k/a  “KILN FURNITURE” “PROPS” “SHELF SUPPORTS”)

There are upright refractory shapes of various cross-sections and
heights that separate, support and stabilize the load of refractory shelves
and the ware placed on them inside kilns at high temperatures.

This shelf-and-post “open” kiln setting system is an alternate one to the
traditional “closed” sagger system and provides ease, flexibility and
safety in placing and firing ware of differing heights.

We have been manufacturing kiln posts for over 60 years in many
shapes and sizes and in
various materials for kiln manufacturers, distributors, hobbyists, and
professional potters and glass makers.

Cross-sections are typically square, triangular and round, 1” to 2-1/4”
across and in lengths up
to 20”, usually in 1” increments. Round posts available in up to 4”
diameter.  All our posts are designed with a hole through the center
lengthwise to increase strength and decrease mass.
Special/custom shapes, lengths and materials available.  Our posts are
accurate in length, mechanically strong and, if properly used and
handled, long lasting.   We offer them in two standard materials:

#1021-6:
A cordierite composition that possesses extremely low thermal
expansion  (C.O.E.).  Products made from this material can withstand
terrific thermal shock: they can be cycled from cold to hot and hot to cold
very rapidly with no cracking, spalling or shattering.
Its maximum use temperature is 2380o Fahrenheit (1340o Celsius).
This material is fairly hard and dense, and light tan to brown in color.

#3049:
This ceramic composition is located in the low-to-middle range on the
thermal expansion scale.  It can easily accommodate typical pottery firing-
cycles.  Most importantly, it can withstand temperatures beyond Cone 20
(2800o Fahrenheit or 1530o Celsius).  This material is fairly hard and
dense; off-white in color and brings a safety factor to your firing that is
uncommon in usual kiln furniture. Recommended for Cone 12 and
higher.
